This is Post 6 in our hail damage series for Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Burr Ridge, La Grange, Hodgkins, Willowbrook, Oak Brook, and Brookfield drivers. [Missed Post 5? See how collision centers and PDR shops compare.]

You got an initial estimate. Then your chosen shop took a closer look, and the number changed — usually upward. If that’s caught you off guard, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common points of confusion in the hail claims process, and it’s worth understanding why it happens before it happens to you.

It Usually Comes Down to What the First Estimate Could — and Couldn’t — See

As we covered in Post 2, a quick daylight or driveway inspection often misses dents that only become visible under proper PDR lighting. So when a specialized shop does a full evaluation, it’s common for the dent count to increase simply because more damage becomes visible under the right conditions — not because anyone did anything wrong the first time around.

Common Reasons the Estimate Changes

Hidden dents. Dents near trim, moldings, or roof rails are easy to miss in a fast inspection and often only appear once those areas are properly examined.

R&I operations. “Remove and reinstall” — some parts (moldings, antennas, weatherstripping) need to be temporarily removed to access and repair the panel underneath, which adds line items that weren’t part of the original estimate.

Molding and trim removal. Similar to R&I, this is often necessary for a proper repair but isn’t always accounted for in a first look.

Re-inspections. If your insurer requires a second look before approving additional costs, that’s a normal checkpoint in the process, not an obstacle.

Why Supplements Are Normal, Not a Red Flag

A “supplement” is simply an updated estimate submitted after more damage is found or more accurate documentation is available. It’s a standard part of the hail claims process — especially for a damage type like hail, where the full extent often isn’t clear until a vehicle is properly inspected. If your shop submits a supplement, it generally means they’re being thorough, not that costs are being inflated.

What You Can Do to Stay Ahead of It

Ask your shop to walk you through what changed between the initial and updated estimate, line by line.

Keep copies of every estimate and supplement — it makes any conversation with your insurer clearer and faster.

If a supplement is submitted, ask your shop for a realistic timeline on insurer approval, so you know what to expect.

Coming Up Next in This Series

In our next post, we’ll cover a claim outcome that raises a lot of questions: what it actually means when your insurer offers to total your vehicle — including what Actual Cash Value (ACV) is and why it matters.

Read why “preferred” doesn’t always mean specialized.]

We’ve covered why experience matters and why “preferred” isn’t the same as “specialized.” Now let’s put the two repair paths side by side, because the difference between them can affect more than just how your car looks after the repair — it can affect what shows up on its history report.

The Two Repair Paths, Side by Side

Collision Center

Specialized PDR Shop

Primary method

Often involves paint work and/or parts replacement

Paintless Dent Repair — no paint, no replacement

Factory finish

May be altered if repainting is involved

Preserved in most cases

In-house hail expertise

Sometimes outsourced

Performed daily, in-house

Typical repair time

Can take longer, especially with paint/parts

Often faster, since no paint curing or parts ordering is needed

Reporting impact

Higher likelihood of being logged as bodywork

Often logged as PDR, which may not affect vehicle history the same way

Why This Matters for Your Car’s Value

Here’s the part that catches a lot of drivers off guard: repair type can influence what appears on a vehicle history report like Carfax. Repairs involving repainting or panel replacement are more likely to be logged in a way that a future buyer — or your own insurer at resale — can see. Paintless Dent Repair, because it preserves the original factory panel and finish, is generally treated differently in that reporting, and depending on your insurer, it may not appear at all, or may simply show as a minor repair with little to no impact on value.

If you plan to keep your car long-term, this might matter less to you. But if resale value is a consideration — especially on a newer vehicle — it’s worth asking your shop directly how the repair will be documented.

It’s Not About One Being “Bad”

To be clear: collision centers do excellent work in their specialty — accident repair, structural work, parts replacement when a panel truly can’t be saved. The point isn’t that one type of shop is better across the board. It’s that hail damage specifically tends to be better suited to PDR when the panel can be repaired without paint, simply because that method preserves more of the vehicle’s original condition.

Questions Worth Asking Either Shop

“Will this repair involve any repainting or parts replacement?”

“How will this repair be documented or reported?”

“Is PDR possible for all of my vehicle’s damage, or will some panels need traditional repair?”

Coming Up Next in This Series

Next, we’ll look at something that surprises a lot of first-time claimants: why your final repair estimate often ends up higher than the initial number — and why that’s usually a normal part of the process, not a red flag.

About What The Hail Auto Dent Repair

What The Hail Auto Dent Repair, located at 2325 Wisconsin Ave, Downers Grove, IL, specializes exclusively in Paintless Dent Repair — preserving your factory finish and, in most cases, your vehicle’s resale value.

This is Post 4 in our hail damage series for Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Burr Ridge, La Grange, Hodgkins, Willowbrook, Oak Brook, and Brookfield drivers. Read about your right to choose your own repair shop.]

By now you know that being on your insurer’s preferred list doesn’t mean you’re required to use that shop. But there’s a related assumption worth unpacking too: the idea that a “preferred” or “in-network” shop is automatically the better choice for hail damage specifically. That’s not always the case — and understanding why can save you from a repair that doesn’t hold up the way you’d expect.

What “Preferred” Actually Measures

Being added to an insurer’s preferred vendor list typically reflects things like processing speed, paperwork efficiency, and volume agreements — not necessarily specialization in a specific type of repair. A shop can be an excellent choice for general collision work (accidents, fender benders, bumper replacements) while having very little day-to-day experience with hail damage specifically.

That distinction matters more than most drivers realize.

The Outsourcing Reality

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people: many collision centers, dealerships, and general body shops don’t have an in-house PDR technician. When hail damage claims come in, they often bring in outside PDR contractors to handle that portion of the work.

This isn’t inherently a problem — but after a major hailstorm, demand for PDR technicians spikes fast. Shops that don’t normally handle hail volume sometimes bring on technicians they haven’t worked with before, simply to keep up. Without an established relationship or a track record with that technician, it’s hard for the shop itself to guarantee the quality of that specific repair.

Why Experience Level Varies So Much in PDR

Paintless Dent Repair is a skill that improves significantly with repetition. A technician who works hail damage daily develops a trained eye for depth, panel behavior, and where metal can be safely pushed back without stressing the paint. A technician with limited experience — even a capable one — is more likely to miss smaller dents or take a slower, less precise approach.

This is why it’s worth asking directly:

“Who will actually be performing the PDR work on my vehicle?”

“Is this technician in-house, or outsourced for this repair?”

“How many years of specific PDR experience do they have?”

A shop confident in its process should have no problem answering these clearly.

Quality Control Is Also Part of the Equation

Beyond individual skill, it’s worth considering how a shop verifies its own work. Daily-PDR shops typically have internal quality checks built into their process — multiple-angle lighting reviews, panel-by-panel sign-off — because hail repair is the core of what they do, not an occasional add-on. That kind of built-in accountability is harder to maintain for a shop where hail repair is a small fraction of overall volume.

What This Means for You

None of this means preferred or general collision shops are bad — many do excellent work in their core specialty. It simply means “preferred” and “specialized in hail damage” are two different things, and it’s worth confirming which one you’re actually getting before you commit.

Coming Up Next in This Series

In our next post, we’ll put this side by side directly: Collision Center vs. PDR Shop — Which One Protects Your Car’s Value? — including what each repair path can mean for your Carfax report down the road.

Read why proper PDR lighting matters more than a driveway inspection.]

If you’ve filed a hail damage claim, there’s a good chance you’ve heard some version of this: “If you don’t use one of our preferred shops, you’ll have to pay the difference out of pocket.” It’s one of the most common things drivers hear after a hailstorm — and it’s also one of the most misunderstood parts of the claims process.

What “Preferred Shop” Actually Means

Insurance companies maintain lists of shops they’ve partnered with — often called Direct Repair Programs (DRPs). These partnerships can offer real conveniences: faster claim processing, streamlined paperwork, sometimes a guaranteed timeline. That part is true and worth acknowledging.

What’s less clear to most drivers is that “preferred” is not the same as “required.”

Your Right to Choose

Illinois law protects your right to choose your own repair shop — insurers cannot force you into using a specific one. If you feel pressured or told otherwise, you can contact the Illinois Department of Insurance for guidance on your rights as a policyholder.

This matters especially for hail damage, where the type of repair makes a real difference. A shop that specializes daily in Paintless Dent Repair will typically evaluate and handle hail damage differently than a general collision center that only occasionally deals with hail claims.

About the “You’ll Pay the Difference” Claim

Here’s what’s actually true: estimates are negotiable, and supplements are a normal, expected part of the hail claims process — not a sign that something went wrong. If your chosen shop finds additional damage once the vehicle is inspected under proper PDR lighting (see Post 2), submitting a supplemental estimate to the insurer is standard practice, not an unusual request.

If an insurer’s initial estimate is lower than your chosen shop’s estimate, that’s a starting point for a conversation — not necessarily a bill you’re stuck paying. A shop experienced in insurance communication can walk you through that process.
At What The Hail Auto Dent Repair, our goal is to provide repairs to our customers at zero dollars out of pocket. Obviously the insurance companies try their best not to pay the full requested amount. They use benchmarking strategies to reduce repair costs by comparing costs of used parts replacements in order to pay a smaller bill, so we are left with no other choice, but accept their prices.

Why the Deductible Question Comes Up

Many preferred/DRP shops require the customer to pay their full deductible as part of the agreement with the insurer. Independent PDR specialists are often more flexible here, and many will work with you directly on deductible arrangements — which is worth asking about upfront, regardless of which shop you choose.

What to Ask Before You Decide
“Am I required to use this shop, or is it a recommendation?”
“What happens if my chosen shop’s estimate is higher — how does the supplement process work?”
“Does this shop have in-house PDR technicians, or is that work outsourced?”
“What’s your policy on deductible assistance?”
Coming Up Next in This Series

In our next post, we’ll dig into another myth worth unpacking: “Preferred shops are always better.” We’ll look at why experience — not just being on a list — is what actually determines repair quality.

This is Post 2 in our hail damage series for Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Burr Ridge, La Grange, Hodgkins, Willowbrook, Oak Brook, and Brookfield drivers. [Missed Post 1? Start here with the biggest mistakes to avoid after a hailstorm.]

After a hailstorm, it’s common to hear the same advice from an insurance company: don’t take your car anywhere, just wait at home for an adjuster to come take a look. It sounds convenient — but it’s worth understanding what that inspection actually involves before you rely on it as the final word on your damage.

Why Driveway Inspections Can Miss Damage

A home inspection is typically quick, happens in natural daylight, and often relies on basic equipment — sometimes little more than a reflective striped board held up to the panel. The problem isn’t only the adjuster’s intent; it’s the conditions. Hail dents are shallow, and in direct sunlight, shadows that would normally reveal a dent’s edges simply don’t form the way they need to. It’s important to point out that if the car is dirty or if it’s raining during the adjuster’s visit, the adjuster will probably not cancel. He will write what he “can”. Many of our customers with hail damage in Hinsdale and Clarendon Hills IL area this year have reported extremely inaccurate estimates written by their insurance adjusters that went to their homes to look at their vehicles.

Why PDR Lighting Makes a Real Difference

Paintless Dent Repair (PDR) technicians use specialized lighting — long fluorescent panels positioned at specific angles — inside a controlled, shaded environment. That setup creates consistent shadow lines across the panel, which is what actually makes hail dents visible, including smaller ones that are easy to miss in daylight.

This is why it’s common for a proper PDR inspection to identify more dents than an initial home estimate. It’s not necessarily that the first estimate was done carelessly — it’s that the lighting conditions of a driveway inspection make accurate counting genuinely difficult. Despite that, also be aware that insurance adjusters quite often dismiss disassembling costs. It’s not only about how many dents or how big they are, but also how to fix them. The most effective and safe way is by massaging the dents from the inside of the panel. For that access, disassembling is most of the times necessary.

What This Means for Your Claim

If your initial estimate feels low, or if it was based on a quick home inspection, your claim is generally entitled to have a supplemental process started, with a more thorough evaluation — ideally from a shop with dedicated PDR lighting (Most conventional bodyshops don’t have it). Bringing documentation from your initial inspection to your shop will save time because the shop needs to read it to find out if there is additional damage or work to be done in the claim.

Insurance Adjusters May Total Your Vehicle On Spot

This year hail damaged cars have a high salvage value, so your insurance may consider a better financial idea FOR THEMSELVES to sell your car to auction instead of paying to repair. If you your car is not paid off and you don’t have gap insurance, you may lose a lot of money. Guess who probably doesn’t care! …yep, that trillionaire institution looking at your car in your driveway.
Having insurance adjusters going to your home without anybody with enough technical experience advocating for you, is like giving your weapons to your enemy before a battle.

A few practical tips:

Ask specifically whether your inspection was done with PDR lighting or in daylight — aways prefer a PDR Shop. If you want to save time and avoid unnecessary drama, take your car to a competent shop before the insurance looks at it.
What The Hail Auto Dent Repair advocates for you against insurance abuses, and makes the claim process smooth and hassle-free for you.

Coming Up Next in This Series

In our next post, we’ll tackle another common claim: “You’ll pay more out of pocket if you don’t use our preferred shop.” We’ll walk through what Illinois policyholders actually have the right to choose — and where negotiation is possible.

If you live in Hinsdale, Downers Grove, Clarendon Hills, Darien, Hodgkins, La Grange, Burr Ridge, Willowbrook, Oak Brook, or Brookfield, you know this isn’t typically an area with frequent, severe hail. That’s exactly why this year’s two major hailstorms caught so many drivers off guard — a lot of vehicle owners here are dealing with a hail insurance claim for the first time.

Hail damage estimating involves more variables than most people expect, and when the process isn’t handled carefully, it can lead to disagreements between the customer, the repair shop, and the insurance company. This guide is the first in a series that walks through exactly what to expect, the most common mistakes, and how to make sure your car — and your claim — are handled properly.

The Basic Rule

If your vehicle sustains hail damage and you carry full coverage, your insurer is required to pay for the repair. That part is straightforward. What varies is how the estimate is calculated, and that’s where a first-time claimant can lose money simply by not knowing what questions to ask.

The Biggest Mistakes People Make After a Hailstorm

1. Waiting too long to get an inspection. The sooner your vehicle is properly evaluated, the easier it is to document the full extent of the damage.

2. Accepting the first estimate without question. Initial field estimates — especially quick, home-based inspections — can miss damage that only becomes visible under proper PDR (Paintless Dent Repair) lighting. This doesn’t mean every adjuster is trying to shortchange you; it simply means the inspection conditions matter a lot, and it’s worth getting a second, more thorough look before assuming an estimate is final.

3. Choosing a shop that doesn’t specialize in PDR. Not every body shop has an in-house PDR technician — many outsource hail repair work, and quality varies a lot depending on the technician’s experience.

4. Not understanding what happens if you keep the check without repairing the car. This one surprises people: insurers generally don’t pay twice for damage to the same panel. So if you accept a payout and don’t get the repair done, any future damage to that same area can become more complicated to claim later on. It’s not automatic denial — but it’s a real complication worth avoiding.

What’s Coming Next in This Series

Over the next several posts, we’ll go deep into the specifics:

Myth #1: Should you really just wait for the insurance adjuster to inspect your car at home?

Myth #2: Will you really pay more if you don’t use your insurer’s “preferred” shop?

PDR vs. Collision Centers: what actually happens to your car — and your Carfax report

Total loss claims: what Actual Cash Value (ACV) really means

A full checklist and FAQ to help you handle your claim with confidence

About What The Hail Auto Dent Repair

What The Hail Auto Dent Repair was voted the area’s best paintless dent repair service.

If your vehicle was caught in the recent hailstorm in the Alton, Illinois area, you are not alone. Parts of Alton and nearby Jerseyville were recently hit by severe hail, including golf ball-sized hail that left thousands of vehicles with dents, dings, and roof damage.

At What The Hail Auto Dent Repair, we specialize in professional auto hail repair in Alton, IL, helping vehicle owners restore their cars quickly while protecting the original factory finish whenever possible.

Why Hail Damage Repair Matters

Many people do not realize that even small dents caused by hail can affect the resale value of a vehicle. When left untreated, hail damage may also lead to paint stress, corrosion, and long-term cosmetic issues.

That is why choosing the right repair method — and the right technicians — is critical.

Our team uses a specialized process called PDR (Paintless Dent Repair). PDR is an advanced repair technique that removes dents without sanding, fillers, or repainting the vehicle.

The biggest advantage?

Your vehicle keeps its original factory paint.

That means:
• No mismatched paint
• No CARFAX rebuilt report
• Faster turnaround times
• Better resale value
• Cleaner repairs

While What The Hail Auto Dent Repair also performs conventional paint and body work when necessary, our goal is always to preserve the original finish whenever possible.

What Is Paintless Dent Repair (PDR)?

Paintless Dent Repair in Alton, IL has become one of the most requested services after severe storms because it is efficient, clean, and cost-effective.

PDR works by carefully massaging dents from behind the panel using specialized tools and lighting systems. When performed correctly by experienced technicians, the damage becomes virtually invisible.

Unfortunately, there is currently a major shortage of qualified PDR technicians across the country.

Because of that, several collision centers offering hail repair services in the Alton area outsource the actual dent repair work to temporary technicians or traveling subcontractors. In many cases, the final quality may not be what customers expect.

At What The Hail Auto Dent Repair, we hold our technicians to a much higher standard.

Why Customers Trust What The Hail Auto Dent Repair

We require all of our PDR technicians to have:
• A minimum of six years of real-world experience
• Proven qualifications
• Advanced hail repair knowledge
• Professional quality standards

Our focus is simple:

Convenient Locations Near Alton

We have a shop in Troy, Illinois, but for many customers in Alton, our St. Louis facility is actually even closer and more convenient.

Our St. Louis location is:

9560 Page Avenue
St. Louis, MO
